If you are pregnant and considering adoption, the adoption process may seem difficult to understand at first. Many birth mothers have questions about what happens next and what choices they can make. Learning about each step can make the process feel easier and less overwhelming.
Courageous Hearts Adoptions helps birth mothers understand adoption and get the support they need. From the first conversation to the final step, our team guides the birth mothers throughout their journey.
Steps in the Adoption Process
Step 1: Talking to an Adoption Agency
The first step in the adoption process is a phone call, text, or meeting with our agency. During the first conversation, we will assign you a dedicated adoption worker.
You can ask questions and learn in detail about adoption. You can speak openly about your situation and learn about your options.
Step 2: Making an Adoption Plan
When you choose to place your baby for adoption, our team will help you create an adoption plan.
This plan helps you decide:
- The type of adoption you want (open, semi-open, or closed)
- The adoptive family you would like to choose
- Meet with the attorney that will represent you personally
- Your preference for your hospital plan
- The amount of contact you would like after the adoption placement
These choices help make the plan personal and meaningful.
Step 3: Choosing a Family
Many birth mothers choose the adoptive family for their baby. We will provide you with the adoptive family profiles that meet your preferences, list of adoptive families. You can read about the family’s home, interests, and reasons for adopting, which can help you find a family that feels right for your child.
Step 4: Support During Pregnancy and Placement
Depending on your situation and the state laws in your state, you might qualify for certain financial assistance. These include help with your pregnancy related living expenses, medical transportation, and medical care during pregnancy.
After placement you will finalize your post adoption communication agreement, which will state the details of your communication with the adoptive couple of your choice.
Step 5: Support After Adoption
After your baby is born and the placement takes place, the agency will provide continued services to help with physical and mental health management which will include lifetime adoption counseling and support to reach future and long-term goals.
The adoption journey does not always end after placement. Many birth mothers continue to receive support up to six weeks post-delivery, and adoption counseling for lifetime if needed including support groups and counseling.
The adoption process has several steps, but you do not have to go through them alone. The right support can make the journey easier.
When you connect with Courageous Hearts Adoptions, our adoption consultants will help you learn about your options and make informed decisions for yourself and your baby.

Positive Adoption Language Disclaimer –
We understand that using words such as “give up” or “put up” to describe adoption can be hurtful and inappropriate. However, we must include these words in our blog posts to appear in expectant moms’ Google search results. While we promote positive adoption language, many expectant moms that come to us at first do not understand what that means. Therefore, our blog posts may use the language they understand, such as “how do I give up my baby for adoption” or “how do I put up my baby for adoption,” in order to explain how to create an adoption plan for their baby.
